The Dark God Morgoth's lieutenant in the First Age, in the Second Age Sauron helped the races of Middle-Earth create their Rings of Power, and then betrayed them by creating his own Ring, the One Ring.
This is Sauron as he stood facing the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at the end of the Second Age.
The Alliance won, and Sauron was cut down, the Ring taken from him, but it was lost, and none knew of it for many years.
